For many industries, hydraulic systems make life so much easier and keep them ticking. For one, hydraulics have the highest power density of any mechanical transmission system in existence. Whether it’s the stuff of superheroes, science or art, it’s said that hydraulics will be around for centuries to come and we will never stop needing them. With that in mind, let’s take a look at which industries rely heavily on hydraulics.
Motoring
As the largest users of hydraulics in the world, the motoring or automotive industry is the only industry that uses them for all manufacturing processes and in the products they create i.e. hydraulic systems that create smaller hydraulic systems such as car brakes. From the manufacturing machines that produce cars to the garages that repair them, hydraulics are everywhere.
Construction and agriculture
In construction, we nearly always see hydraulic equipment on site. This is because it makes the lifting and carrying of heavy and dangerous products and materials look easy. As well as construction, a lot of hydraulic systems can be found in the agriculture or farming industry. The flexible arms of machines such as bulldozers and excavators are hydraulics at work, whereas tractor hydraulic systems can internally steer and stop the vehicle.
Aerospace
Aviation and aerospace industries contribute billions and billions to global GDP and harness some of the most advanced technology. And, jet setting across the world uses some of the most superior hydraulic systems in existence. Aeroplanes and jets use hydraulics to get you to your chosen destination, from adjusting the wings to opening and closing doors. Take-off and landing gear are also examples of hydraulic equipment that are equally as important.
Marine
Hydraulic systems are everywhere within the marine industries. Aboard a ship, you’ll find hydraulics up on deck, within an engine room and in control rooms. Whether needed to stabilise, steer or power a ship, hydraulics are pretty important. As well as on water, you’ll also find hydraulics on lock gates, boat hoists and linkspans.
Fitness
We may all be trying to get fitter ready for summer, but did you know that a lot of equipment you use at the gym is powered by hydraulics too? Who knew!
