The choice between a hydraulic or pneumatic system is one which is often considered by those in the industrial, military and marine industries. Both power systems are similar in a number of ways; transmitting pressure into mechanical energy and both requiring hoses and pumps for force-control. Here we take a more in-depth look into the two systems.
What Are Hydraulics?
Hydraulic systems use pressure and hydraulic fluids to create mechanical power. This is achieved by applying pressure against a side of the reservoir where the fluid is stored which forces the fluid through valves. This fluid is then forced against a hydraulic motor, piston or cylinder on the other side of the reservoir which creates movement. For example, if the actuator is a piston, the pressure exerted will create a forward thrust until it is released at which point the piston will retract.
When Are They Used?
Hydraulic systems are vital for a wide range of industries. Hydraulic systems are used in vehicles and machinery. From cars and vans to plant machinery, hydraulic systems are critical. Hydraulics power brakes, power steering and pistons in machinery.
What Are Pneumatics?
Pneumatic systems operate in a very similar way to hydraulic systems. These systems require an air compressor which is used to pull air from the atmosphere through a valve and into a tank. Pressure is then applied to this air which passes through pipes and more valves. This pressured air then reaches an actuator where the energy is transformed into mechanical energy.
When Are They Used?
Pneumatic systems are used in a number of the same industries as hydraulic systems, however, are more prevalent in the construction and demolition industry. Pneumatic machinery like jackhammers and pneumatic drills are common in construction.
