Short distances from the Country’s Marine Capital – Portsmouth and Southampton – the town of Fareham sits at the tip of where Portsmouth’s Harbour begins. The area is not short of marine and water based things to do and history – even the Titanic set off from Southampton back in 1912.
Marine is the theme of this blog because, as well as holding historical and cultural value, being near water is incredibly beneficial for your health also. It relaxes us, makes us calmer and helps combat mental health issues like depression and anxiety.
So create your own marine memories with our ideas for some water-themed days out.
History – Fort Brockhurst and Porchester Castle
For a more historically driven day out, why not check out an impressive Victorian Fort less than a quarter of an hours drive from Fareham? Built in the mid-1800s, Fort Brockhurst’s commanding red brick structure and moat was built for protection from a French invasion. The interior is free to explore every second Saturday of every month from May to Sept but you’re free to tour and photograph the exterior as much as you’d like
if you still have time to spare, why not visit Portchester Castle nearby, which sits right next to Portchester lake and Portsmouth Harbour.
Nature – Titchfield Haven National Nature Reserve
Roughly a 15-minute drive away from Fareham is the perfect spot for viewing some incredible wildlife: Titchfield Haven National Nature Reserve. A stimulating day out for kids and adults alike, the reserve covers 369 acres and features rivers, pools, reedbeds and meadows, ready for visitors to spot some incredible wildlife. From a vast array of birds to colourful aquatic fish, amphibians and plants, get your camera ready to capture all that prowl the wild. Don’t forget to cosy up and relax with a drink at their cafe afterwards.
Fun – The Pyramids Centre and Blue Reef Aquarium
Aimed more at the kids, the Pyramids Centre is a fun fuelled day out featuring erratic water slides, fountains and waves, so get your swimming costumes ready! For the adults, there is also a gym and a spa to relax after a long week if slides don’t entice you.
Alternatively, the kids definitely won’t be bored at the Blue Reef Aquarium where they can spy all manner of marine creatures from sharks, colourful, adorable otters and rays. With an ar-RAY of things to do, (see what we did there?) visitors of all ages will leave feeling energised and excited.
Relax – Port Solent
Spend a chilled afternoon or whole day at the luxurious and peaceful area of Port Solent and its marina. With plenty of eateries, coffee shops, picturesque views and photo opportunities, simply relax and indulge as you watch the sunset and the numerous yachts float in from a day at sea.
